At the impressive age of 70, Boyan Lefterov proved that age is just a number by becoming the world champion in the 6 km cross-country race for men in the Masters Athletics Championships held in Gothenburg, Sweden. Competing in the 35+ age group, the seasoned Bulgarian athlete claimed the gold medal with an outstanding time of 24:07 minutes. His achievement was further crowned with a silver medal in the 5000-meter race, showcasing his incredible endurance and dedication.
Lefterov had meticulously prepared for the event, planning his participation in four different disciplines: 800 meters, 1500 meters, 5000 meters, and cross-country. He explained that his primary focus was on maintaining his natural abilities, acknowledging that at his age, improvement is more about preservation rather than setting new records. Despite this, his training regime was far from conventional.
“Every morning, I tried to do a cross-country run in a small forest near Pernik, and once a week, I would run on a track, usually doing fartlek training. This gave me about 4-5 training sessions per week. I always aim to do something of quality, but I don’t run at a steady pace. When I can’t run, I do alternative training – mowing grass with a motorized mower or chasing a swarm of bees, and sometimes they fly faster than me – the runner,” Lefterov shared with 360mag.bg.
His unconventional training and sheer determination are what led Lefterov to stand atop the podium, inspiring many with his dedication and passion for athletics even at an age when most people would consider slowing down. His achievements are a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of staying active throughout one’s life.
Boyan Lefterov’s success story is not just about winning medals but also about setting an example of what is possible with dedication, smart training, and a positive mindset.

The first leg is scheduled for Wednesday, September 18 in Rome at 2:30 PM. The return match will see the Garnet team host their Italian counterparts at the Stade de Genève at 7:00 PM in what promises to be a Gala fixture! Tickets are already on sale for the match. ITALIAN ROWING CHAMPION
Gabriel Soares is a prominent figure in Italian rowing, known for his skill and determination. Born in 1997, he has quickly made a name for himself on the international stage. His career highlights include winning a silver medal in the Men’s Lightweight Double Sculls at the Paris 2024 Olympics, alongside Stefano Oppo. This achievement cements his status as one of Italy’s top rowing talents and a strong competitor on the global scene.
Carlos Nassar is an Olympic champion. Carlos Nassar dominated the competition and won the title in the 89 kg category in weightlifting at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, setting two world records.
The 20-year-old Bulgarian national athlete, Carlos Nassar, achieved a total of 404 kilograms, surpassing the previous world record by a full eight kilograms. In the snatch, Nassar completed three clean lifts and lifted 180 kilograms, while in the clean and jerk, he achieved 224 kilograms in just two attempts, breaking his own previous record.
The Olympic champion and new world record holder in the 89 kg weightlifting category, Carlos Nassar, triumphed in his hometown of Paris and shared that: “Nothing happens by chance. It was wonderful that the competition took place where I was born. I could have lifted more, but this was enough for the gold medal, we set a world record, and I filled my heart with the joy of the entire arena, which was full of Bulgarians, which made my heart swell with pride.”

Servette continue their fine run with a 1–0 victory at Heerenschürli against Zürich thanks to a goal from Gloria Marinelli!
In excellent form at the start of this season, Servette traveled to Zürich with the firm intention of securing yet another win. Under the Zurich sun, however, they quickly realized it would be no easy task. Still, it was the Genevans who created the first big chance. After a risky intervention from the opposing goalkeeper, Ghoutia—despite being some distance from the empty goal—tried her luck, but her strike was too far off target to open the scoring.
Celebrations were also cut short at the half-hour mark when Simonsson powered a header into the net—only to see the goal ruled out for offside. Just seconds later, Hutchins was forced into another spectacular save to deny what felt like the inevitable.
And inevitable it was. As has so often been the case early this season, persistence paid off. From a perfect cross by Martinez, Marinelli stole in ahead of everyone to score what would prove the only goal of the match—a well-deserved strike just before the hour mark. The Garnet went on to create several more chances, notably through Marinelli (66′) and Sobal (81′). They held firm until the 104th minute, when a Zürich effort struck the post, causing a few nervous moments but no real damage.
Servette return from Zürich with their fourth consecutive win, another clean sheet, and top spot in the provisional standings—pending Sunday’s clash between GC and Basel on September 21!
Everyone at Servette FCCF would also like to send their full support to Vincze Borbala, who was stretchered off in the second half, and wish her a swift recovery.
A few days of rest now await the Garnet before hosting Aarau this Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at Trois-Chêne!

After their fine victory in the capital against YB, Servette travel this weekend to Heerenschürli to face FCZ. Another big AWSL clash awaits.
Servette are riding an exceptional wave of momentum at the start of this season: three wins in three league matches, one win in the Swiss Cup, and currently top of the AWSL standings thanks to a better goal difference than GC. Cristian Toro’s players are cruising in these early weeks and show no signs of slowing down!
After Lucerne, St. Gallen, and YB, the Garnet will now take on FCZ this Saturday at 4 p.m. at Heerenschürli! A clash between two teams that have dominated Swiss women’s football in recent years. Having shared titles back and forth for several seasons, both sides fell short of expectations last year. Now, a new season is underway, and both are determined to reclaim the top of Swiss football. At this early stage, Servette hold the advantage with their perfect league start. Zürich, currently 4th, are off to a flatter run with one win, one draw, and a loss in the Limmat derby against GC.
In their last encounter, Servette put on a show, beating FCZ 4–0 at Letzigrund. That said, Zürich are always dangerous, as shown by their 2–1 victory at Trois-Chêne in the first clash of the 2024–25 season. And even if trips to Zurich have often favored Servette, complacency would be a mistake. Self-control, solidity, and composure will be the key words for this fourth league matchday.
400 Matches for Cristian Toro!
Having arrived this summer from Valencia to replace Jose Barcala, Cristian Toro reached his 400th match in women’s football as a head coach last weekend against YB! Toro began his career at the start of 2011 with Valencia CF, where he stayed for 7 seasons, coaching 203 official matches. He then moved on to Sevilla, where he spent 6 seasons and oversaw 172 games. At the end of 2024, Toro briefly returned to Valencia, managing the first team 21 times before joining Geneva and Servette FCCF, with whom he has now coached 4 matches—his 400th coming in Bern against YB.

What a victory against the Swiss champions! Servette struck three times against YB thanks to a red-hot Therese Simonsson and took over the top spot in the AWSL standings!
Under brilliant sunshine and in front of a large crowd at Breitenrain, the Garnet got the job done in the second half to return from Bern with all three points.
Enterprising from the start, Cristian Toro’s players created several chances in the first half, notably through Simonsson and Marinelli, but without finding the net. The Bernese were not outdone either and also managed to threaten Servette’s defense—though they too failed to score. A goalless draw at halftime seemed fair.
Right after the break, however, Servette immediately made the difference. From a Martinez cross, Simonsson opened the scoring with an unstoppable header. YB were caught cold. From then on, Servette pushed harder, creating more chances and leaving only scraps for the yellow-and-blacks. Despite their dominance, Servette had to wait until the final minutes of the match to seal the deal, scoring twice in quick succession to make it 2–0 and then 3–0—both through Simonsson, who is clearly in dazzling form at the start of this season!
A fine victory for Servette, who move to the top of the AWSL table thanks to a better goal difference than GC. Now it’s time for a short rest before getting back to work to prepare for next Saturday’s big clash against FC Zürich.
After an excellent start to the season, Servette’s women will face the reigning Swiss champions this Sunday at 2 p.m.
Three matches, three victories, 18 goals scored and only 1 conceded. That’s Servette’s record at the start of this season—a record that can be called outstanding. The Genevans have been a real steamroller so far, winning their matches with complete control from start to finish. Now, a new challenge awaits them, and not just any challenge: the reigning champions!
YB’s start to the season has been less impressive than that of SFCCF. In the league: two matches, two draws—against St. Gallen (1–1) and Zürich (0–0). As defending Swiss champions, the Bernese will begin their Swiss Cup campaign in the round of 32. In the meantime, they also began their European journey, with mixed results so far. In the first qualifying round for the UWCL, the yellow-and-blacks started with a 1–0 victory over Apollon Ladies before losing their final to Fortuna Hjørring. That defeat still secured them a spot in Q2 of the new European competition, the UEFA Women’s Europa Cups.
In this clash of titans, Servette enter with a psychological advantage based on their early-season results. YB, however, will be without two of their former stars—Imaan Beney and Naomi Luyet, who both left during the summer—as well as last season’s league top scorer, Stéphanie Waeber, who recently suffered a torn ACL in her left knee during training. Everyone at Servette FCCF wishes her a speedy recovery.
Despite these “advantages” for Servette, YB are hungry for wins and will be eager to finally kick off their season with a strong performance!
So, mark your calendars: Sunday, September 14 at 2 p.m. at the Spitalacker in Bern—the first women’s football matchday on Bernese soil!
